The Arc of the Moral Universe Just Got a Little Bit More Bendy
On June 28, 1969, gay men & women courageously rose up against police brutality, for the first time in the history of the struggle for LGBT rights.
On June 30, 1986, the Supreme Court of the United States enshrined the right of states to imprison and criminalize the lawful conduct of LGBT citizens. It took 17 long, painful years to abolish that law.
The final push for true equality began in the summer of 2003, when Bowers v. Hardwick was overturned.
Today, nearly 43 years to the day since a brave, ragtag uprising of marginalized LGBT citizens against brutality, oppression and murder, the President of the United States of America has finally, publicly affirmed a basic tenet of universal human rights:
* The rights of a minority cannot be put to a popular vote
* Self-determination, and the pursuit of happiness, are cherished ideals in a democracy
* That all of us - gay, straight and in between - are equal before the law
* That when it gets hot outside, gay politics go, in a word, fucking crazy.
WHAT A GREAT DAY
